SXSW March 21
I met a Scottish journalist named Olaf this week. He talked about wanted to get off the beaten path. So I took him to a late brunch at Maria’s Taco Express. We sat on the patio and got gospled by the usual Sunday Gospel brunch band… Scrappy Judd Newcomb and Carolyn Wonderland and others. We washed away our sins with breakfast tacos and a Bloody Mary. Olaf had FOUR tacos! That’s a record, as far as I know. Granted, he was a viking of a man with a hang over.
I dropped Olaf off at Barton Springs… too cold in March for my Texas bones, but just right for a Scotsman. He said it was glorious.
Although technically still a SXSW day, most of the out-of-towners are gone. Some friends and I eased our way back into regular Austin life with a ‘Shady Thing’ outside on the Patio at Shady Grove. We got to Listen to our good friend Craig Marshall play with The Lucky Strikes through the fence at another restaurant.
We then headed to a house concert/party where David Garza, Nina Singh, Mark Addison, and Brad Houser were jamming in the living room. What a party. David made my year with comments about my album. Another hero who now knows who I am. It’s dreamy. We hated to go, but Steve Poltz was in town from San Diego playing at the Continental, so we dashed over there to show our support.
Tomorrow, the day after SXSW always feel like New Years Day to me. Happy New Year!
