The ACL gods are smiling
After 3 solid days of bands at the ACL festival, I started my day with a VERY last minute invitation from my friend David Alvarez, who works at KUT. “Can you get here in 20 minutes for the Austin City Limits taping of Elvis Costello?” I sped, parked illegally and claimed my reserved ticket just in time.
It was amazing! Elvis played for 2 hours, lots of classics and 5 or 6 songs from his new album. At the end, he beckoned a bunch of us on the stage and we jumped up and down singing “Pump It Up!” The band was so tight! The drummer, Pete Thomas mouthed the words to every song. I love it when drummers do that. It comes across like they really love the music they’re playing.
Then I got to meet Elvis! KUT and KLRU are in the same building on UT campus. After the ACL taping, David took me to one of the basement studios where he engineered while Jeff McCord interviewed Elvis for his radio show ‘Left of the Dial”.
Thank you David! I almost didn’t answer David’s call because I didn’t recognize the number!
