May I take your pledge?
Twice a year, I volunteer to answer the KUT pledge phones. I had this idea to fill one volunteer shift where all of the pledge phones would be manned by Austin based musicians… sort of like a local version of the Jerry Lewis Telethon. It worked!
Last Tuesday, I rounded up Eliza Gilkyson, Ray Wiley Hubbard, Will Taylor, Sarah Hickman, Will Harrell, Darin Murphy, Susanna Sharpe, John Pointer, Carlos Sosa and all 3 of The Greencards (Kym, Eamon, and Carol) to answer the pledge phones with me. We all donated signed CDs as premiums. Some donors were so excited to have their local music heroes take their pledge. Ray was hilarious… “Oh, you want to join as a business member ($500). What kind of business are you in? Oh, so you rob people for a living?” Eliza was the cheerleader. “Let’s get this thing pumping.” The next thing you know, we’ve worked out an a cappella version of ‘I Thank you’ that we sang on the air to thank someone named Kathy who pledged $1000.
“You didn’t have call, like you did, but you didn’t, but you did and I thank you. You didn’t have to pledge, like you did, but you did, but you did, and I thank you”
John Aeilli, host of Eklektikos sang a sweet bass part.
We took over $16,000 in pledges in 4 hours and a great time was had by all.
